The Le Corbusier group referred to their LC2 and LC3 Collections (1928) as"cushion baskets," which they designed as a modernist response to the traditional club chair. These pieces reverse the standard structures of sofas and chairs by having frames that are externalized. With thick, resilient pillows resting within the steel frames, the idea was to offer all the comfort of a padded surface while applying the elegant minimalism and industrial rationale of the International Style. The resulting aesthetic of the simple tubular structure is remarkably relevant to how we live today, almost 90 years later.

Widely considered one of the most influential architects of the 20th century, Le Corbusier (born Charles-douard Jeanneret-Gris) is credited with changing the face of urban architecture, bringing it into the technological age. Connecting architecture with revolution, his legacy demonstrates a strong, if utopian, sense of purpose to meet the needs of a democratic society dominated by the machine. "Modern life demands, and is waiting for, a new kind of plan, both for the house and the city," he said in 1923.
Born in Switzerland, Le Corbusier was encouraged by a teacher to take up architecture. He built his first house at the age of 18 for a member of his school"s teaching staff. In 1908, he went to Paris and began to practice with Auguste Perret, an architect known for his pioneering use of concrete and reinforced steel. Moving to Berlin, Le Corbusier worked with Peter Behrens, who taught him about industrial processes and machine design. In 1917, he returned to Paris, where he met post-Cubist Amde Ozenfant and developed Purism, a new concept of painting. In 1920, still in Paris, he adopted the pseudonym Le Corbusier.
Paradoxically, Le Corbusier combined a passion for classical Greek architecture and an attraction to the modern machine. He published his ideas in a book entitledVers une Architecture, in which he refers to the house as a "machine for living," an industrial product that should include functional furniture or "equipment de l"habitation." In this spirit, Le Corbusier co-designed a system of furniture with his cousin Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand. The tubular steel furniture" including the famous LC4 Chaise Longue and LC2 and LC3 seating collections" projected a new rationalist aesthetic that came to epitomize the International Style. Corbusier was both credited with and criticized for his reinvention of the modern urban skyline" notably, the buildings he pioneered in Paris" banlieues, which were considered efficient but austere.
Though Le Corbusier"s illustrious career came to an abrupt end in 1965 when he drowned while swimming in the Mediterranean Sea off Roquebrune-Cap-Martin in France, his influence is undisputed.

Le Corbusier was born as Charles-douard Jeanneret-Gris (1887-1914) in La Chaux-de-Fonds, a small city in Neuchtel canton in north-western Switzerland, in the Jura mountains, just 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) across the border from France.
He began experimenting with furniture design in 1928 after inviting the architect, Charlotte Perriand, to join his studio. His cousin, Pierre Jeanneret, also collaborated on many of the designs. Before the arrival of Perriand, Le Corbusier relied on ready-made furniture to furnish his projects, such as the simple pieces manufactured by Thonet, the company that manufactured his designs in the 1930s.
In 1928, Le Corbusier and Perriand began to put the expectations for furniture Le Corbusier outlined in his 1925 book L"Art Dcoratif d"aujourd"hui into practice. In the book he defined three different furniture types: type-needs, type-furniture, and human-limb objects. He defined human-limb objects as:"Extensions of our limbs and adapted to human functions that are type-needs and type-functions, therefore type-objects and type-furniture. The human-limb object is a docile servant. A good servant is discreet and self-effacing in order to leave his master free. Certainly, works of art are tools, beautiful tools. And long live the good taste manifested by choice, subtlety, proportion, and harmony".
The first results of the collaboration were three chrome-plated tubular steel chairs designed for two of his projects, The Maison la Roche in Paris and a pavilion for Barbara and Henry Church. The line of furniture was expanded for Le Corbusier"s 1929 Salon d"Automne installation,"Equipment for the Home".

Care Instructions:

Because the product is used outdoors over extended periods of time, regular cleaning with a soft brush and soapy water is important

The Wonder Sofa is a contemporary reinterpretation of 1970s lounge furniture by Space Copenhagen for GUBI. Its designers have updated the informal, generous and playful nature of the original modular sofa with an elegant and simple frame.

Care Instructions:
For cleaning the upholstered surface, first try to brush off the dirt gently. If this is not enough then vacuum the surface. If further cleaning of the upholstery is needed, a stain remover is recommended. The cleaning has to be gentle and must always be tested on the most invisible area of the surface before the actual cleaning. Avoid blotches by gentle, circular rubbing towards the stain. To avoid stains, quickly remove the dirt with a piece of absorbing household wipe and clean with water and colorless washing-up liquid.
Do not use the following products for the padding:

The Oscar sofa strikes a pleasing balance between modernity and tradition, large in size yet light in appearance. The sofa is made from a European hardwood frame, jute webbing and hessian straps and then covered with a mix of materials that includes natural fibers, animal hair and wool. It features two large feather cushions that are notable for their depth, the back has a line of sewn in pulls, lending the sofa the appearance of a buttoned back, without the actual buttons. The feet are made from walnut stained beech, with the front ones being turned versions. By contrasting long straight lines with delicate natural curves, Mathew Hilton has created a piece that is both reserved and full of humility. The Oscar armchair is a piece perfect for those who like their modernity laced with a little familiarity. Made in the UK.

The Tearoom Lounge Chair and Tearoom Sofa join the Tearoom Club Chair to complete the leisure experience in a multitude of settings, from exclusive hotels, clubs and lounges to private homes. Pairing the luxurious feel of full upholstery with a clean silhouette rooted in geometric forms, the Tearoom Series is as appealing to the touch as it is easy on the eyes. While creating the clean silhouette, Ross took exceptional care to imbue every inch with mood-lifting comfort. Every design element curves gently to ensure that the furniture’s contours complement our own. Beneath the upholstery, a wood and foam construction creates the ideal pairing of sturdiness and lush comfort. What is a lounge design, after all, if it doesn’t deliver on the experience you imagine when you get drawn into its sculptural form from afar? Timeless in its expression and execution, the Tearoom Series is well-suited to both period and contemporary environments. Like the Tearoom Club Chair, the Tearoom Lounge Chair and Tearoom Sofa radiate elegant yet strict femininity. Their embracing form, while alluring, stops short of being overly casual. As such, the furniture maintains a clear visual connection to the sculptural 1904 Willow Chair that originally sparked the designer’s imagination.
