The small sofa is once again highly relevant after several years dominated by larger sofas. Its simple design, with tight-fitted upholstery and wooden legs originated back in the blossoming functionalism of the 1930s and '40s, as a rebellion against the bulky, Victorian style of the time.
Today, there is a growing need for more flexible furnishings - in public as well as private spaces. Many factors, including less space, many different activities and a need to be online have affected our way of being together. This has created a need for personal space for the individual within the room. The practical size of the Era sofa allows it to easily accommodate furnishing needs in both large and small homes. The series combines modern manufacturing methods with traditional furniture craftsmanship in a timeless and characterful design. Simon Legald has this to say about the sofa: "It took a long time to get the proportions and the interplay between the soft curves and the tight lines of the shell completely right. It was crucial, that the upholstery and the stitching was carried out with the utmost artisanal precision. One nice detail, for example, is that we did not use canvas, but instead upholstered the sofa with textile across the entire shell. For the seat cushion, we have prioritized a solution using custom-cut foam, so that it sits perfectly inside the seat."

Hoffmann was born in Brtnice, Moravia (now part of the Czech Republic). He studied at the Higher State Crafts School in Brno (Brnn) beginning in 1887 and then worked with the local military planning authority in Wrzburg.
He designed installation spaces for Secession exhibitions and a house for Moser which was built from 1901-1903. However, he soon left the Secession in 1905 along with other stylist artists due to conflicts with realist naturalists over differences in artistic vision and disagreement over the premise of Gesamtkunstwerk.3 With the banker Fritz Wrndorfer and the artist Koloman Moser he established the Wiener Werksttte, which was to last until 1932. He designed many products for the Wiener Werksttte of which designer chairs, most notably"Sitzmaschine" Chair, a lamp, and sets of glasses have reached the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, and a tea service has reached the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Hoffmann"s style eventually became more sober and abstract and it was limited increasingly to functional structures and domestic products. In 1906, Hoffmann built his first great work on the outskirts of Vienna, the Sanatorium Purkersdorf . Compared to the Moser House, with its rusticated vernacular roof, this was a great advancement towards abstraction and a move away from traditional Arts and Crafts and historicism. This project served as a major precedent and inspiration for the modern architecture that would develop in the first half of the 20th century, for instance the early work of Le Corbusier. It had a clarity, simplicity, and logic that foretold of a Neue Sachlichkeit.
Some of Hoffmann"s domestic designs can still be found in production today, such as the Rundes Modell cutlery set that is manufactured by Alessi. Originally produced in silver the range is now produced in high quality stainless steel. Another example of Hoffmann"s strict geometrical lines and the quadratic theme is the iconic Kubus Armchair. Designed in 1910, it was presented at the International Exhibition held in Buenos Aires on the centennial of Argentinean Independence known as May Revolution. Hoffmann"s constant use of squares and cubes earned him the nickname Quadratl-Hoffmann ("Square Hoffmann").

When you look at the graceful shapes and sensual curves of Finn Juhl's work, you may be shocked to realize that he designed these pieces 60 to 70 years ago. A pioneering force in his own country, Finn Juhl is also credited, along with fellow Danes Arne Jacobsen, Hans Wegner, Borge Mogensen and Poul Kjaerholm, with introducing Danish modern to midcentury America.
Although he initially wanted to become an art historian, his father persuaded him to attend the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture. By 1934, he had a prestigious position with architect Vilhelm Lauritzen and was exploring the functionalism movement by creating clean, geometrical buildings like the broadcasting house Radiohuset, a pinnacle of Danish architecture that now houses the Royal Danish Academy of Music.
Juhl considered himself an architect of the interior as well as the exterior. He began designing furniture like the Poet Sofa (1941) for use in his own home, located north of Copenhagen. Juhl felt that furniture, handicraft and art should create a completeness of the house, which in his case was decorated with works by the Danish painters of the time. Today, the Finn Juhl House, an early example of open-plan design with views to its garden from every room, is part of the Ordrupgaard Museum.
In 1937, Juhl began collaborating with master cabinetmaker Niels Vodder, and the pair was the buzz of the 1945 Cabinetmakers' Guild exhibition with their expressive, sculptural pieces. One such item was the Model 45 Armchair (1945), which broke from tradition by freeing the upholstered areas from the wood frame.
At age 39, Juhl made his U.S. debut in 1951 at the Good Design exhibit in Chicago and at MoMA in New York, and he represented Denmark in creating the interior of a meeting hall at the United Nations headquarters. A few years later, SAS asked Juhl to redesign the interior of its air terminals in Europe and Asia.
Finn Juhl is still winning awards decades after his death: The Wallpaper Design Award 2010 was awarded to the Baker Sofa (1951) in the category of Best Reissue.

If further cleaning of the upholstery is needed, a stain remover is recommended. In 2011 he combined those two loves by creating The Inheritance Collection. Mario Bellini is an Italian architect and designer known for his sleek and sophisticated couches, sofas, and dining chairs. Motivated by style as well as functionality, the artist’s creations solve everyday problems one may encounter in the home. He is commonly associated with his Camaleonda modular sofa, a set of square seats that can be separated and rearranged.Born on February 1, 1935 in Milan, Italy, he attended the Polytechnic University of Milan and earned a PhD in architecture in 1959. After completing his education, Bellini was hired as a consultant to Italian electronics company Olivetti, where he remodelled the typewriter, giving it a wedge-like body and a rubber-skin keyboard. The artist also became well known for his furniture designs at this time, designing his trademark office chairs—Figura, Persona, Imago, and Forma. Since the 1980s, he mostly worked on architectural projects, designing the the Sheik Zayed Museum in 2007 and the London Link Bridge at Deustche Bank in 2010. Today, Bellini lives and works in Milan, Italy. His work is currently held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Dallas Museum of Art, and the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Museum of Design in New York, among others.

The inner "spaces" of the sofa are designed in sizes allowing for a comfortable seating position without limiting the freedom of movement and the freedom to stretch your legs. The soft shapes of the upholstery are deliciously inviting and, also, constitute a marked contrast to the sofa's exterior of more simple and geometrical forms. The interior belongs to the occupant and the exterior belongs to the room.
The exterior vertical and rectangular surfaces allow for easy and natural placement of couches along with and close to walls as well as positioned centrally in the room; and, likewise, the feasibility of placing the furniture side by side as well as back to back. The distinguished character of the CH102 2-seat Loveseat joins the CH100 series by Hans J. Wegner. It is a sumptuous sofa that works well on its own, in groups, or with the CH100 series of sofas.
CH102 Loveseat is hand made on a solid beech inner frame with polished stainless steel legs, visible frame and armrest fronts. Cushions are fully upholstered on all sides, built around a foam core wrapped in down and foam granulate.

Hans Jorgensen Wegner, (April 2, 1914 - January 26, 2007), was a world renowned Danish furniture designer. His high quality and thoughtful work, along with a concerted effort from several of his manufacturers, contributed to the international popularity of mid-century Danish design. His style is often described as Organic Functionality, a modernist school with emphasis on functionality. This school of thought arose primarily in Scandinavian countries with contributions by Poul Henningsen, Alvar Aalto, and Arne Jacobsen. In his lifetime he designed over 500 different chairs, over 100 of which were put into mass production and many of which have become recognizable design icons.
Wegner worked for some time for Arne Jacobsen, a successful Danish designer. Wegner was in charge of the furniture in the Aarhus Municipal Hall, which Jacobsen designed. After some years under Jacobsen, Wegner started his own company. Along with fellow architect Borge Mogensen, he designed furniture for FDB (a Danish chain of grocery stores), spearheaded by Erik Kold - who founded an organization of Danish furniture makers that launched Danish design abroad.
In his later years Wegner became more attached to PP Mobler (which produces many of pieces originally designed for Johannes Hansen) and for whom he designed several chairs late in his life. He remained active throughout his life. An example of his later work is the"Hoop Chair", originally designed in 1965 with a steel tube base and finally put into production made entirely in wood in 1985 (for PP Mobler). Wegner retired from public life only in the last decade of his life.
