Eero Saarinen, the son of influential Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen and his second wife, Louise, was born on his father's 37th birthday, August 20, 1910. They emigrated to the United States of America in 1923, when Eero was thirteen.He grew up in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, where his father was a teacher at the Cranbrook Academy of Art and he took courses in sculpture and furniture design there.
Beginning in September 1929, he studied sculpture at the Acadmie de la Grande Chaumire in Paris, France. He then went on to study at the Yale School of Architecture, completing his studies in 1934. Subsequently, he toured Europe and North Africa for a year and returned for a year to his native Finland, after which he returned to Cranbrook to work for his father and teach at the academy. He became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1940. Saarinen was recruited by Donal McLaughlin, an architectural school friend from his Yale days, to join the military service in the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). Saarinen was assigned to draw illustrations for bomb disassembly manuals and to provide designs for the Situation Room in the White House. Saarinen worked full-time for the OSS until 1944. After his fathe r"s death in 1950, Saarinen founded his own architect's office,"Eero Saarinen and Associates". Eero Saarinen died of a brain tumor in 1961 at the age of 51.

Hans Jrgensen Wegner, (April 2, 1914 - January 26, 2007), was a world renowned Danish furniture designer. His high quality and thoughtful work, along with a concerted effort from several of his manufacturers,1 contributed to the international popularity of mid-century Danish design. His style is often described as Organic Functionality, a modernist school with emphasis on functionality. This school of thought arose primarily in Scandinavian countries with contributions by Poul Henningsen, Alvar Aalto, and Arne Jacobsen. In his lifetime he designed over 500 different chairs, over 100 of which were put into mass production and many of which have become recognizable design icons.  Wegner worked for some time for Arne Jacobsen, a successful Danish designer. Wegner was in charge of the furniture in the Aarhus Municipal Hall, which Jacobsen designed.3 After some years under Jacobsen, Wegner started his own company. Along with fellow architect Brge Mogensen, he designed furniture for FDB (a Danish chain of grocery stores), spearheaded by Erik Kold - who founded an organization of Danish furniture makers that launched Danish design abroad.  In his later years Wegner became more attached to PP Mbler (which produces many of pieces originally designed for Johannes Hansen) and for whom he designed several chairs late in his life. He remained active throughout his life. An example of his later work is the -Hoop Chair-, originally designed in 1965 with a steel tube base and finally put into production made entirely in wood in 1985 (for PP Mbler). Wegner retired from public life only in the last decade of his life.

Hans Brattrud designed the Scandia range in 1957 as a school project. At that time, however, he was not able to manufacture the chairs properly.
In 1958, Brattrud saw laminated wooden products for the first time on a fair in Germany and understood that this was the right method for industrializing his Scandia design. High voltage laminating was in it's infancy, but he convinced a factory in Norway, Hove Møbler, to buy equipment for wood laminating. They then began manufacturing the Scandia range in 1961.
They were manufactured in Norway and distributed all over the world until the early 1970`s.
Today they are sold at auctions and vintage shops all over the world and have become a true Scandinavian classic.
Hans had his own design office in Oslo from 1958 until 1963 and developed many national and international projects. Working on one of these projects made him interested in prefabricating houses. After this, his primary focus was to develop designs for prefabricating houses and other architectural patents. Today the Scandia chair is manufactured exclusively by the Norwegian company, Fjordfiesta, with approval of Hans Brattrud. Ecolabeled by the Swan. This model has waterbased lacquer.

When you look at the graceful shapes and sensual curves of Finn Juhl"s work, you may be shocked to realize that he designed these pieces 60 to 70 years ago. A pioneering force in his own country, Finn Juhl is also credited, along with fellow Danes Arne Jacobsen, Hans Wegner, Borge Mogensen and Poul Kjaerholm, with introducing Danish modern to midcentury America. Although he initially wanted to become an art historian, his father persuaded him to attend the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture. By 1934, he had a prestigious position with architect Vilhelm Lauritzen and was exploring the functionalism movement by creating clean, geometrical buildings like the broadcasting house Radiohuset, a pinnacle of Danish architecture that now houses the Royal Danish Academy of Music. Juhl considered himself an architect of the interior as well as the exterior. He began designing furniture like the Poet Sofa (1941) for use in his own home, located north of Copenhagen. Juhl felt that furniture, handicraft and art should create a completeness of the house, which in his case was decorated with works by the Danish painters of the time. Today, the Finn Juhl House" an early example of open-plan design with views to its garden from every room" is part of the Ordrupgaard Museum. In 1937, Juhl began collaborating with master cabinetmaker Niels Vodder, and the pair was the buzz of the 1945 Cabinetmakers" Guild exhibition with their expressive, sculptural pieces. One such item was the Model 45 Armchair (1945), which broke from tradition by freeing the upholstered areas from the wood frame. At age 39, Juhl made his U.S. debut in 1951 at the Good Design exhibit in Chicago and at MoMA in New York, and he represented Denmark in creating the interior of a meeting hall at the United Nations headquarters. A few years later, SAS asked Juhl to redesign the interior of its air terminals in Europe and Asia. Finn Juhl is still winning awards decades after his death: The Wallpaper Design Award 2010 was awarded to the Baker Sofa (1951) in the category of Best Reissue.

Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971) is considered to be one of the most important Scandinavian architects and designers in post-war time. He is the legendary creator of several 20th Century furniture icons, including e.g. The "Egg" chair, The "Swan" chair and the "Ant" and "Seven series" chairs. Arne Jacobsen was one of the very early modernists in Danish architecture. He was trained in the neoclassic school of the Academy of Art in Copenhagen in the 1920s but was early open to the international modern movement. His most important commission was the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen from 1958, for which also many of the mentioned furniture icons were designed. Jacobsen designed not only the building but also the interior, right down to the smallest details. Arne Jacobsen developed his own signature style and worked independently from 1930 when he opened his own design office. He is the designer behind many modern classics ranging from furniture and lighting to textiles and cutlery.
