Our Reality series by Harry Allen is inspired by the beauty of everyday objects. By casting natural forms, Allen thoughtfully reimagines objects and gives them new uses. Born in New Jersey in 1964, Harry Allen received a Master’s Degree in Industrial Design from Pratt Institute. In 1993, he established Harry Allen Design, and since then, he has designed furniture, lighting, products and interiors for a wide variety of international clients. Harry’s work is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art and the Brooklyn, Denver and Philadelphia Museums of Art. His awards include the Brooklyn Museum of Art’s Modernism/Young Designer Award and two Industrial Design Society of America IDEA Awards. Harry’s interest in art and innovation has led to some of the most intelligent products and interiors in the world today.

The original emoji, Cairo was a typeface designed by Susan Kare in 1984 for the first Macintosh operating system. Taking its name from the hieroglyphics of ancient Egypt, each symbol was drawn by hand using the bitmap grid. A few notable symbols lived on into later operating systems including the cursor and watch.
Kare designed this woven blanket for the Jacquard loom, an early example of computer-controlled machinery, operated with punched cards and invented by Joseph Jacquard in 1801.

A solid cast iron Menorah that is both simple and ceremonial. Designed as one piece with a seamlessly integrated tray to catch wax drippings that doubles as a repository for used matches. A classic design, Menorah is included in the permanent collections of the Memorial Art Gallery, the National Museum of American Jewish History and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Recipient of the Chicago Good Design Award in 2011.

About the Designer

Josh Owen is an internationally renowned industrial designer, educator and, author. He is the president of his eponymous design studio, Josh Owen LLC and is a Distinguished Professor of Industrial Design at The Rochester Institute of Technology. Owen's projects are produced by major manufacturers and have won many awards. His work is included in the permanent design collections of the ADAM Brussels Design Museum, the Centre Georges Pompidou, the Chicago Athenaeum, the Corning Museum of Glass, the Denver Art Museum, the Musee des beaux-arts de Montreal, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the National Museum of American Jewish History and the Taiwan Design Museum. He is the author of the book Lenses for Design and the forthcoming book Design for Study.

About the Designer

Ben Medansky is an orchestrator of controlled chaos, a sculptor of hard edges in naturalistic worlds, a refiner of industrial aesthetics that retain rough and human qualities.
The varied environments of Arizona, Chicago and Los Angeles - both natural and manmade - are the foundation to Ben’s creative inspiration. He is especially influenced by Brutalist and Modern architecture and industrial design; specifically by the strong and diverse architecture of downtown LA and it's seemingly uninterrupted construction. Ben is also drawn to themes and motifs of technology and space exploration and the industrial aesthetics they employ. Much of this work explores variations on radial symmetry and grids while utilizing a limited color palette. It is an appropriation of aesthetics employed by the mechanical world; an experiment in mimicking strong forms out of a fragile material. The output is a meditation on minimalism and mechanics, re-mastered in earthen and eternal material.

Talbot & Yoon is a design firm founded by Mark Talbot and Youngjin Yoon, who were trained and registered as Architects in the state of New York. They incorporate their architectural thinking into the playful objects that they design for everyday use. Talbot & Yoon believe that play is a central tenet of both design and culture and want to facilitate play through their design objects. While the products they sell are ‘finished’ when they leave the studio they are never truly completed; character, variation and reconfigurability allow the consumer to experience the same delight from the products through participating with them both physically and emotionally as Talbot & Yoon experienced designing them. They also believe that it if it isn’t fun, why bother, and imagine a world of products that people can take home and play with, that can grow and change as people's needs and desires grow and change.
