Flemming Lassen designed the overstuffed easy chair, The Tired Man, for The Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Competition in 1935. It is characterized by organic, bear-like shapes and then as now it created a sensation with its curved form and voluminous armrests. Sitting in the chair should, in Flemming Lassen’s own words, be ”as warm and safe as a polar bear cub in the arms of its mother in the middle of the ice cap”. Flat-packed upholstered lounge furniture sounds like a crazy idea. Hans Hornemann considered it a requirement that the function did not involve any compromise with the design. Ace is constructed from molded plywood, covered with molded foam for the highest possible comfort. The back is flexible, which gives it a springy feeling, ensuring great sitting comfort. In order to reach the goal of this ambitious project, Normann Copenhagen has specially developed production tools, brackets, screws, legs and fabrics.
Ace compellingly conquers a room with its relaxed, yet stylish, attitude.
Ace is delivered in two attractive fabrics, a vibrant velour and a flecked wool textile, as well as soft, exclusive leather. The woolen textile, “Nist”, has been developed in-house by Normann Copenhagen to complete the characteristic visual style. Nist is manufactured using a nontraditional weaving technique and contains 52 percent linen, which produces an attractive natural flecking of the fabric. The velour brings Ace a seductive elegance, while Nist gives the chair a more stringent, masculine look.

Ace has legs in stained beech, in the same color tones as the fabrics for a uniform expression. The stain allows the wood’s natural flame patterns to shine through and adds a discrete play to the monochrome color universe consisting of five inviting shades.

Harry Bertoia (March 10, 1915 - November 6, 1978), was an Italian-born American artist, sound art sculptor, and modern furniture designer. At the age of 15, he traveled from Italy to Detroit to visit his older brother, however he chose to stay and enrolled in Cass Technical High School, where he studied art and design and learned the art of handmade jewelrymaking. In 1938 he attended the Art School of the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts, now known as the College for Creative Studies. The following year in 1937 he received a scholarship to study at the Cranbrook Academy of Art where he encountered Walter Gropius and Edmund N. Bacon for the first time.
Opening his own metal workshop in 1939, he taught jewelry design and metal work. Later, as the war effort made metal a rare and very expensive commodity he began to focus his efforts on jewelry making. Later in 1943, he married Brigitta Valentiner, and moved to California to work at the Molded Plywood Division of the Evans Product Company. He worked for them until the war ended in September 1945.
In 1950, he moved to Pennsylvania, to establish a studio, and to work with Hans and Florence Knoll. (Florence was also a Cranbrook Graduate). During this period he designed five wire pieces that became known as the Bertoia Collection for Knoll. Among them the famous "Diamond chair" a fluid, sculptural form made from a molded lattice work of welded steel.
In Bertoia's own words,"If you look at these chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture. Space passes right through them."

Founded initially as a reforestation project in Managua, Nicaragua, Masaya & Co. later grew into a sustainable furniture brand, dedicated to timeless design, artisan craftsmanship and the sustainability of our planet’s resources. For every product sold, their company plants 100 trees in Nicaragua to help combat deforestation in the region as a result of clear-cutting. To date, Mayasa & Co. has planted more than 900,000 trees and currently employs 150 artisans in the region.
