This work inspired Saarinen to design a chair that would provide exceptional comfort from its shell alone, and not just from the furnishing. They emigrated to the United States of America in 1923, when Eero was thirteen.He grew up in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, where his father was a teacher at the Cranbrook Academy of Art and he took courses in sculpture and furniture design there. He became good friends with Florence Knoll.
Beginning in September 1929, he studied sculpture at the Acadmie de la Grande Chaumre in Paris, France. He then went on to study at the Yale School of Architecture, completing his studies in 1934. Subsequently, he toured Europe and North Africa for a year and returned for a year to his native Finland, after which he returned to Cranbrook to work for his father and teach at the academy. He became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1940. Saarinen was recruited by Donal McLaughlin, an architectural school friend from his Yale days, to join the military service in the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). Saarinen was assigned to draw illustrations for bomb disassembly manuals and to provide designs for the Situation Room in the White House. Saarinen worked full-time for the OSS until 1944. After his fathe r's death in 1950, Saarinen founded his own architect' s office, " Eero Saarinen and Associates". Eero Saarinen died of a brain tumor in 1961 at the age of 51.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (born Maria Ludwig Michael Mies; March 27, 1886 - August 17, 1969) was a German-American architect. He is commonly referred to and was addressed as Mies, his surname. Along with Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright, he is widely regarded as one of the pioneering masters of modern architecture.
Mies, like many of his post-World War I contemporaries, sought to establish a new architectural style that could represent modern times just as Classical and Gothic did for their own eras. He created an influential twentieth-century architectural style, stated with extreme clarity and simplicity. His mature buildings made use of modern materials such as industrial steel and plate glass to define interior spaces. He strove toward an architecture with a minimal framework of structural order balanced against the implied freedom of free-flowing open space. He called his buildings"skin and bones" architecture. He sought a rational approach that would guide the creative process of architectural design, but he was always concerned with expressing the spirit of the modern era. The Executive Armchair with Casters is supported by a five-point, pneumatic height-adjustable swiveling base with twin-wheel casters for use on carpet. The Executive was originally made of fiberglass but was later updated in polyurethane. The feel of this classic seat, however, remains unchanged, with a molded shell that flexes slightly with the sitter and a contoured plywood seat. Unlike Saarinen's furniture, which was consistently sculptural in form, these fluid lines didn't appear in his architecture until the 1950s. When looking at the dome-shaped glass wall of the Kresge Auditorium at MIT, it's not a big leap to see the same shape in the back of his Executive Chair.

Poul Kjrholm (1929-1980) was a trained carpenter and continued his studies at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts. He had a particular interest in different construction materials; especially steel which he considered a natural material with the same artistic fineness as other natural materials. Poul Kjrholm was employed at Fritz Hansen for about a year, where he designed a number of noteworthy chair prototypes. In 1955 Poul Kjrholm initiated his collaboration with manufacturer Ejvind Kold Christensen, which lasted until Poul Kjrholm"s death in 1980. In 1982, Fritz Hansen took over the production and sales of"The Kjrholm Collection", developed from 1951 to 1967, designs, which are logical to the minute detail with an aura of exclusivity. In 2007 Fritz Hansen added two new pieces to the Kjrholm Collection. Pieces that were never in production before, the PK8 side chair and PK58 dining table.
