“In typical Jaime Hayon style, these Paper Lanterns challenge convention,” notes &tradition Brand Manager Martin Kornbek Hansen. “Seen in an ultra light pendant lamp of rice paper, echoing ancient lanterns from Asia - reinvented in a modern aesthetic.”
Dating back centuries, paper lanterns have featured in Asia amongst the privileged and the poor, where different colors, shapes and sizes connote different meanings. Here Hayon has dispensed with cultural formalities to create a series of lanterns all in white. Hand crafted with rice paper merging various sizes and shapes together.
“Lamps play such an important role in people’s lives,” explains Hayon. “For some cultures, they chase away the darkness by bringing hope. I’ve tried to keep this emotional angle about light – in a lamp that also appears light. By making the bottom part of the lamp open, the idea is to bring even more illumination to people everywhere in the world.”
The Paper Lantern series is comprised of three different versions in ivory white rice paper with black stained oak accents in sizes from 17.7 to 27.6 in diameter. Each weighing only 2.2 lbs, they hang delicately in any indoor setting. Living proof that when East and West meet, the past becomes the present in a poetic expression of both.

LZF's eco friendly patented wood veneer finish timberlite® protects your veneer from breakages and allows for easy cleaning. On their the more delicate shades, made from wood strips, a feather duster or an air blower is preferable. In their more solid shades a damp cloth may be used. Clean only the flat surface of the veneer with the cloth avoiding moisture contact along the edge of the veneer. Avoid direct sunlight or strong indirect sunlight on the fixture. The Bagobo O pendant by Ay Illuminate is produced in the Philippines by tribes scattered along the desolate eastern coast of the Davao Gulf where ages ago new migrants mixed with the native population to form the community Bagobo, its name derived from the words bago, meaning new, and obo, meaning growth. Made of bamboo over which a handmade paper shade is fitted, the Bagobo O comes in small, medium and large sizes. All of the materials that make up this pendant are natural, and it is “handmade” in the truest sense of the word.
